What is the difference between “say” and “tell”?

They both mean the same thing, but we use them in different ways.

We use say with a noun or adverb.
“She always says the right thing.”
“He didn’t say how he likes his food.”

We use tell with a pronoun.
“She always tells me the right thing.”
“He didn’t tell us how he likes his food.”
